SHRINKER / STRETCHER TIPS

8 Jul 2009

One of the most important tools needed to shape metal and one of the last to be bought is a Shrinker and Stretcher. This should be THE FIRST piece of metal shaping equipment that you buy. This tool is invaluable in the repair of automotive dog legs, trunk lips, and rotted window lips.

For aircraft use, making contours and reverse curves, cowl lips, reinforcing pieces, and wheel pans are just a few of the many uses of a Shrinker or

Rear Window Repair Stretcher. One of the most valuable places for the shrinker is on low crown panels such as automotive door skins and low crown aircraft belly skins. Before you start shaping on an English wheel to make the low crown, first go to the shrinker and lightly shrink all the way around the panel. This will stiffen the panel and when wheeling, the panel will take shape much easier. You can also add more shrinks where necessary to pull the panel in the direction needed.THIS TRICK IS AN AMAZING TIME SAVER!
